February Artist Talk | March Artist Talk | Derivan Open Day 2012

March 2012 Artist Talk with Caroline Joseph @Derivan

calendar date Friday 16th March, 2012 - 3:15pm

Stories from Country: Indigenous Australian Artists, Culture and Influences.

Artist Caroline Joseph will tell her stories of experiences with Indigenous people over 30 years, and show work of a number of Aboriginal artists. She will offer her own artwork with reflections on influences of being in country with Indigenous people.

Caroline is an artist, storyteller and educator.  Her doctoral thesis included large pastel drawings, and focused on sacred oral storytelling (including Yolngu of North-east Arnhemland). She works with an Aboriginal Elder to take people into country to hear his stories and introducing people to creative work.  She has a long history of working as an educator in both arts education (creative process across the arts) and in intercultural education.  She now shows in New York, and has work in Art Atrium Gallery in Bondi Junction.

Describing Caroline's work, her New York gallery has written that it is...

"..concerned with ecologies of place, of geo-spiritual locality - not broad strokes but textural details.  Many of her acrylic paintings and ink and pastel drawings reference Australian Aboriginal motifs, combined with startlingly unique, sometimes abstract, mystical symbolism."
